Message from the President

Jessilin Quint, OD, MBA, MS, FAAO President - Maine Optometric Association

As we wrap up 2024, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the accomplishments we’ve achieved as an association. This year has been a pivotal one for the Maine Optometric Association, as we’ve worked tirelessly to advocate for the advancement of our profession, strengthen our relationships with lawmakers, and enhance the quality of care we provide to patients across the state. Our collective efforts have not only raised awareness about the important role optometrists play in healthcare but have also laid the groundwork for future progress, particularly in modernizing the scope of practice. These legislative efforts will allow optometrists to provide even more comprehensive care, cut health care costs, and improve access to eye care for many communities in Maine. I am deeply thankful for the unwavering commitment of our members, whose dedication and collaboration have made all this possible.

As we look ahead, 2025 is filled with exciting opportunities. We have 4 new doctors joining the MOA Board of Directors, new educational events, and new opportunities to spread awareness about eyecare in Maine. I’m excited for what 2025 holds and confident that, together, we will continue to lead the way in shaping the future of optometry.

Rachel Achenbach, ODVice President -Maine Optometric Association

As the Vice President of the MOA, as well as the Chair of the Membership Committee, I would like to express my gratitude for your dedication and commitment to this association. It is through the engagement of our 183 active members that this association can advocate better patient care, pursue new educational opportunities, foster collaboration among professionals, and make meaningful progress toward improving access to quality eye care throughout Maine.

First, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our 29 newest members from the past 5 years. We are thrilled to have you join our community, and we recognize the importance of your fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Whether you're a new graduate just starting your career, have recently moved to Maine, or are expanding your involvement in optometry, your participation adds tremendous value to the association, and we are excited to support you in your professional journey. Please know that we are here to help you connect with fellow professionals, access resources, and make the most of your membership.

Next, I’d like to recognize and thank our 45 Lifetime Members. We also have 6 doctors that will be transitioning to lifetime membership in 2025:
Dr. Steve Goldstein
Dr. Micheal Gonyea
Dr. Dale Rodrigue
Dr. Renee Whalen
Dr. Janet Whalen
And Dr. Jim Savage.

Your commitment to this association and to the field of optometry is truly inspiring. By becoming a Lifetime Member, you’ve shown an extraordinary level of dedication. Your ongoing support not only helps maintain the strength and vitality of this organization, but it also sets an example for all of us about the power of long-term commitment to our profession and community. I'd also like to take a moment to acknowledge those members who have been part of this association for 10 years or more. Your dedication over the years has been instrumental in shaping the Maine Optometric Association into what it is today. Your experience, leadership, and continued involvement are a cornerstone of our success, and we deeply appreciate your years of service and the wealth of knowledge you bring to the table.

As part of the Membership Committee’s efforts to ensure the future of our association and strengthen the optometric community here in Maine, we have been working hard to connect with students across the country. Over the past few months, we have held a series of meetings with optometry students from various schools. Our goal has been to encourage them to consider Maine as a place to build their careers and to introduce them to the Maine Optometric Association as a supportive professional community. We are excited to see these efforts pay off as we welcome new graduates into the profession here in Maine.

As we look toward the future, I want to encourage each and every one of you to continue to participate and engage with the MOA. This organization is only as strong as the collective energy and input of its members. Whether it’s attending meetings, volunteering for a committee, or stepping up to contact your local legislator when called upon, your involvement is what propels us forward and ensures that we can continue to advocate for the highest standards of optometric care in Maine.

Moreover, as we strive to enhance our programs, expand our advocacy efforts, and provide more opportunities for professional development, your financial support through donations is critical. These donations enable us to continue our work, support legislative initiatives, and invest in the future of optometry. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference, and I ask you to consider how you, as a member of the MOA, can help sustain and grow this association for future generations of optometrists.

Again, I would just like to thank each of you for your continued membership, your participation, and your support. I am proud to be part of this remarkable community of professionals, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the years to come.

Thank you.
