Patients and Public

Doctors of optometry in Maine do so much more than simply prescribe glasses and contacts. Optometrists are the primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions.

Specifically, optometrists:

  • Detect and diagnose eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disorders, lid disorders, and infections such as conjunctivitis
  • Prescribe medications to treat eye diseases
  • Evaluate and treat vision conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia
  • Perform minor procedures such as removing foreign objects from the eye
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care, especially for glaucoma, laser surgery, and cataract patients
  • Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, and low vision devices
  • Provide vision therapy and vision rehabilitation services
